How to care for and maintain furniture: a practical guide by material
Author: EkoBIT team
Regular and gentle care significantly extends the life of furniture, preserves its appearance and saves on repair costs. Below you will find brief but practical procedures according to the types of materials and situations that occur at home and in operation.
General principles that work for most furniture
-
Wipe the dust dry with a microfibre, then with a damp cloth as needed. Water is always the second step.
-
Choose cleaning agents with a neutral pH and without abrasives. Avoid chlorine, acetone, thinners, aggressive "universals" and wires.
-
Protect from sun and heat: direct UV light fades colors and dries out surfaces; do not place furniture close to radiators or fireplaces.
-
Stable climate: ideal relative humidity 40-60% and temperature 18-24 °C.
-
Prevention of mechanical scars: mats for flowers, glasses and furniture legs; do not overload the shelves.
-
First, a test in a hidden location: for each product and "grandmother's" advice.
Wood: lacquered, oiled and waxed surfaces
Routine maintenance: dust dry, then with a slightly damp cloth with a drop of neutral agent. Wipe dry immediately.
Lacquered wood
-
Cleaning: mild detergent solution, polish circular streaks with a dry microfiber.
-
What not: silicone polishes and waxes applied repeatedly can map and slide.
Oiled wood
-
Maintenance: after cleaning, occasionally "feed" the surface with oil according to the manufacturer (approx. 1-2 times a year).
-
Restoration: lightly sand in the direction of the grain (P320), wipe off dust, apply a thin layer of oil, wipe dry after 10-15 minutes. Leave to harden.
-
Safety: leave oil-soaked rags to dry spread out or close them in a metal container (risk of self-ignition).
Waxed wood
-
After cleaning, a very thin layer of wax and polish. Do not exaggerate the frequency (1-2x a year is enough).
Water stains and rings: do not interfere with surface varnishes with a household iron, etc.; for valuable pieces, professional renovation is preferred.
Upholstery (textile)
-
Vacuum once a week with a soft brush (the released dust is abrasive and "rubs" the fibers).
-
Treat stains immediately: gently absorb with absorbent paper, do not rub. Then lukewarm water with a drop of neutral product, dab from the edges to the center.
-
Do not overwater: too much water can loosen adhesives and leave maps behind. Air dry, not heat.
-
Impregnation: after cleaning, consider textile impregnation for easier maintenance.
-
Deep cleaning: it is suitable for heavy pollution thrifty steam cleaning - removes grease, odor and dust mites without excessive chemical pressure (always taking into account the manufacturer's instructions and color fastness).
Leather and leatherette
-
Daily care: dust with a cloth, 1-2x monthly wet wiping.
-
Skin nutrition: leather conditioner 2-4x a year (aniline and pigmented leather need a different approach; suede/nubuck only dry brushing and special sprays).
-
What not: alcohol, disinfectant, paint remover, ammonia - dry and crack.
-
Location: min. 50 cm from heat sources and out of direct sunlight.
Metal (steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass)
-
Cleaning: mild detergent, soft sponge, then dry.
-
stainless steel: polish in the direction of grinding, or stainless steel polishes.
-
Brass/Copper: specialized polishes, at the end a thin layer of wax against oxidation.
-
Rust: treat in time (cutter, passivation, protective coating).
Glass and mirrors
-
Glass cleaner + microfiber, do not pour on the frame, but on the cloth.
-
Frosted/structured glass: avoid abrasives; remove scale deposits with gentle products with a neutral pH.
Stone (marble, granite, terrazzo, technical stone)
-
Neutral pH, wipe dry immediately.
-
Sensitivity to acids (marble, limestone): wine, lemon, vinegar etch - use pads.
-
Impregnation: 1x a year according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Laminate and plastics
-
Gentle remedies, no abrasive powders.
-
Edges: do not let water stand; in case of damage to the edge, solve it quickly so that it does not run.
Outdoor furniture
-
Wood (e.g. teak): decide whether to leave the natural graying or oil it regularly (UV oil 1-2x a year).
-
Polyrattan/metal: wash with soapy water, rinse, dry.
-
Textile seat cushions: wash according to the label, or impregnation against water and stains.
-
Wintering: store clean and dry furniture in a dry place; use breathable tarps outside.
Quick "first aid" for stains
-
Grease (oil, makeup): sprinkle with baking soda/silica sorbent, let soak, vacuum, then mild detergent.
-
Wine/coffee: blot with paper, cold water, then mild detergent; colorfastness test for textiles.
-
Ink: special textile/leather remover; do not use pure alcohol.
-
Chewing gum: cool with an ice pack, carefully remove the frozen one.
-
Candle wax: solidify, mechanically remove; clean the remaining film according to the material.
Maintenance calendar (recommendation)
-
Weekly: dust (everything), vacuum the upholstery, check the mats under the feet.
-
Monthly: polish glass and mirrors, metal parts, lubricate creaking fittings.
-
2x a year: more in-depth cleaning of upholstery and mattresses, inspection of joints, tightening of screws.
-
Annually: restoration of oil/wax on wood, stone and textile impregnation.
When to call in the professionals
-
Mapping varnish, deep scratches and grooves in wood.
-
Sagging seat cushions, odors, mold or after "accidents" (water, splashes, pets).
-
Older and valuable pieces (antiques) - do not use aggressive chemicals or "improvers".
Summary
The basis is regularity, frugality and prevention. Always start dry, continue with gentle cleaning and finish with protection (impregnation/oil/wax). It pays for upholstery and mattresses periodic deep cleaning - ideally gentle steam cleaning, which will release grease, allergens and odors from surfaces without unnecessary chemicals.
