Washing windows in winter: how to have a crystal clear view without icing

Winter doesn't have to be a reason to postpone window cleaning. On the contrary: less pollen, less dust from the street and the sharp low sun will show every smudge - the perfect time to give the windows a chance to shine. You just have to follow a few rules, choose the appropriate means and have a plan. Below you will find practical instructions, tips on winter solutions and solutions for frames, seals and blinds.

Is it advisable to wash windows in winter?

Yes, if:

• there is no wind and the temperature is ideally between -5 °C and +5 °C,

• the sun does not burn directly on the glass (smudges appear faster),

• you work on smaller areas and do not leave the solution on the glass for an unnecessarily long time.

Watch out for thermal shock: do not use hot water on cold glass or too cold a solution in a warm room.

What to prepare

• bucket with winter cleaning solution (see below),

• trowel with sharp rubber and scraper for dried dirt,

• 2–3 microfiber cloths (one for application, one for polishing, one "dry"),

• gloves and non-slip shoes, or a mat under the ladder,

• foil or old towels on window and floor protection.

Winter solution - proven recipes

• Water + rubbing alcohol/isopropyl + a drop of spring

  • 1 l of lukewarm water (approx. 25–30 °C)

  • 100-200ml rubbing alcohol/isopropyl (lowers freezing point)

  • 1-2 drops of mild detergent

• For extra durable smudges add 1 teaspoon of vinegar. But don't overdo it in winter - vinegar doesn't lower the freezing point as much as alcohol.

• We do not recommend use "winter washer fluid" inside - it tends to smell strongly and may contain additives unsuitable for the interior.

Step by step procedure

1. Prepare the window: pull the blinds up, remove the nets, remove coarse dirt with a dry wipe.

2. Frames and seals: first clean the frames with a damp cloth. Do not soak wooden frames; do not use abrasives for PVC.

3. Apply the solution: evenly moisten a small area with a sponge/towel (not the entire window at once).

4. Troweling: guide the trowel from top to bottom in overlapping strokes. Wipe the rubber with a dry cloth after each stroke.

5. Edges and corners: clean with a dry microfibre cloth so that no water remains in the corners.

6. Polishing: if necessary, wipe the glass with a completely dry cloth.

7. Outer side: work quickly, in smaller segments. When the solution begins to catch crystals, add a little alcohol.

Quick tips for flawless glass

• Room easily warm up and ventilate briefly after washing (not during) so that the moisture leaves faster.

• Don't push on the squeegee - the dull rubber makes streaks, replace it in time.

• Newspapers leave it to newspapers - modern inks can make maps.

Frames, seals and windowsills in winter

• PVC: lukewarm water + gentle cleanser; isopropyl topically applied will help with streaks.

• Wood: just moisten lightly and dry immediately; aggressive chemicals can damage the paint.

• Sealing: treat after drying silicone oil or a glycerin stick, you will reduce freezing and extend the service life.

• Forging: oil drop on moving part, check "microventilation" function.

Blinds, blinds and pleats: what you can do in winter

• Aluminum/lamella blinds: pull down, tilt the slats horizontally and vacuum with dry dust (brush attachment). Then it can be gently wiped off slightly moistened microfiber cloth with antistatic spray.

• Textile blinds and pleats: vacuum gently, treat stains locally with a damp cloth - do not get wet, they will take longer to dry.

• Outdoor blinds: visually check the guide rails and dirt near the slats, work only when there is no wind.
